I. SIMT Forum on Qualified Human Resource Planning

On 31 May 2005 the Stuttgart Institute of Management and Technology hosted a forum on "Supply and Demand of Internationally Qualified Professionals - Practiced Qualitative Human Resource Planning". More than 50 Managing Directors and partners of HR consulting companies attended this top event. The forum focused on the increasing shortage of international first-rate talents, which is noticeable today.

The speakers of the SIMT Forum (left to right): Dr. Bernhard Seitz (SIMT), Joachim Reichle (MAHLE International GmbH),Prof. J. Menno Harms (Hewlett-Packard GmbH), Dr. Rüdiger Hummer (Behr GmbH & Co. KG) and Dr. Wilhelm Rall (McKinsey & Company, Inc.),

Speeches

SIMT's Managing Director Dr. Bernhard Seitz highlighted future international challenges for companies and pointed out the importance of the SIMT in this context. The presentations showed trends and featured new ways to solve the task of preparing executives for global challenges. Dr. Rüdiger Hummer, Human Resource Executive of Behr, explained Behr's international personnel policy and which crucial role the SIMT MBA program and Manager Education Network (MEN) plays. Joachim Reichle, Director Corporate Executives and Personnel of Mahle, gave an overview of the personnel development strategy at Mahle. Top Mahle executives are demanded to participate at the SIMT MEN. The 'war for talents' on the international market is, according to Dr. Wilhelm Rall, Director McKinsey & Company, still ongoing and businesses have to build up their image by investing in professional training.

Keynotes

"The international work division is growing. The chances for companies are in new and more significant products, services, business processes as well as global presence," Professor Menno Harms, chairman of the SIMT Board of Governors, summarizes the forum. "For future economic top performances and to secure global leadership, companies will especially need international qualified junior staff." At the get-together, the participants and current SIMT students could network. The intensive discussions among all were a clear sign for the overall success of the event.

II. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dieter Fritsch gave an Interview to Global Study Magazine, London, on MBA programs

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dieter Fritsch, Chairman SIMT Board of Trustees and Rector of the University of Stuttgart, clairifies important points when pursuing an MBA degree.

Who should do an MBA?

Nowadays the world economic changes rapidly. Companies quickly have to adjust to new global work situations or will they will fall back, or even have to give up. Therefore the management must be highly educated and prepared to solve global tasks. An MBA program will provide high-potentials and young professionals with all the necessary skills and tools needed. The MBA program suits young professionals who wish to improve their general management skills and strive for an international career. Students will enhance their soft skills, which are essential for a global career. Professionals seeking to widen their intercultural skills perfectly fit into an MBA program. The Stuttgart Institute of Management and Technology (SIMT), for example, offers an excellent MBA program which is highly international. In 2005 graduates from four continents and twenty-two countries completed their studies successfully at SIMT. Overall such a high level of education will definitely broaden ones horizon.

What are the main differences in curriculum from one MBA program to another?

On the market you will only find very few MBA programs on university level like SIMT, IMD, London Business School and the top US business schools. Students have the option in choosing between three different ways of studying. They can attend a fulltime or part time MBA, or even a career integrated one. The SIMT curriculum offers technology and innovation orientated topics and is very customer orientated.

What is the attraction for someone from Asia for instance to pursue an MBA in Europe rather then anywhere else?

The location of a Business School plays a key role in picking the right school. It can truly be called a Business School if it is near business. In Europe, especially in Southwest Germany, global players such as DaimlerChrysler, Hewlett-Packard and Bosch, just to name a few, are located. SIMT works closely with these companies to provide internship opportunities and in-company projects to its students.

Will an MBA give you hands on knowledge that you would be able to implement in real work situations?

Regarding the teaching methods, SIMT focuses heavily on case studies. They are used primarily to develop and refine cognitive skills in areas such as analysis, problem solving, and decision-making. The objective of the case analysis is to gain knowledge, which can be generalized to similar problems in real work contexts.

Are there any parallels between the brilliance of the German Industry and the type of MBAs that you can pursue in German?

German Industry and the German business schools work hand in hand educating elite students. The brilliance of the German Industry is, for example, reflected in the SIMT curriculum.

Is it true that the main thing you get out of an MBA is the network of people you build up during the course of study?

Well, I would not say it is the main thing but it is one important aspect of an MBA. At the SIMT you will study with people from many different countries worldwide. This multicultural network can support your future career tremendously.

Is there any link between communication, innovation and leadership?

In my opinion these three aspects are linked closely. Without communication no innovation is created and leadership is needed to realize the innovation. Actually all three depend on each other and one cannot do without the other.

Would you be excluded from ever being able to get a top leadership position without having done an MBA?

No, but it is definitely a door opener and perfectly prepares you for top leadership positions. With an MBA background you are much more confident in solving challenging leadership tasks.
