III. SIMT GRADUATE PROFILE: JONG WOO LEE MBA CLASS 2006
This month we speak with Jong Woo Lee, a 2006 SIMT graduate of the Full-time MBA Program, with a concentration in Technology and Innovation Management, about his experiences at SIMT and where he is now.
1.What was your job/career situation when you decided to pursue an MBA?
I worked for LG (Electronics) in Korea and Asia/Pacific for more than 7 years before coming to Germany in 2004. I was a senior consultant for diverse industries with major specialties in business strategy, process innovation and knowledge management. An MBA was a perfect opportunity to gain general business perspectives as well as international experience which I considered as essential elements to my career goal of becoming a global professional manager in 5 years.
2. Why did you choose SIMT?
Firstly, Germany is a major player in the EU in terms of economic impact so by studying in Germany I hoped to gain better understanding of Europe and it's world leading economies and companies. Secondly, a European MBA had more value to me as there were more U.S. based MBAs in the market and I considered my personal market value and identity to be better served through a German MBA. In addition, in terms of ROI, SIMT is very competitive compared with U.S. business schools. Thirdly, SIMT is located in Stuttgart, a heart of German industry with many global companies such as DaimlerChrysler, Bosch, Porsche, Hugo Boss, etc based there. Other major players such as BASF, BMW, EADS, and SAP are all within 2 hours of Stuttgart . For an MBA, SIMT's strong practical business relationships made it the best location in Europe. Last but not the least, the international student environment was very attractive. SIMT had more than 90% International students when I applied and I believed this true international environment would give me best opportunity to gain knowledge of the diverse cultural and business differences which I would need for a global career.
3. What are the best elements in the SIMT MBA program in your opinion?
Practical experiences from a theoretical framework into real business environment. My experience of working for more than 16 months for Bosch in a 'Praktikum' was very beneficial to my understanding of how German business people and companies operate. In addition, for my master's thesis I worked with BASF for 6 months, working closely with the marketing team . For me the most valuable element of the SIMT MBA was the 'learning by doing' that I achieved working for these successful German companies .
4. Was the mix of backgrounds and cultures of the students beneficial and, if so, how?
At SIMT I met professors and students from over 30 countries. We shared time together in classes, projects, company visits, parties, and sporting activities. Now I can understand what those 30 different gestures, expressions, and perspectives mean and this is the unique benefit of studying at such an international business school.
5. How has the SIMT MBA helped in the development of your career?
My SIMT MBA helped me get interview opportunities from major global companies. It helped me to get a new job with more authority and responsibilities. I now work for a German company in the renewable energy industry in the Korean Office as a sales/marketing director, VP. I believe my SIMT MBA increased my market value as a global manager by giving me better business perspectives and management skills with my international team members and customers.
6. What did you learn that is important for your current job?
I learned general perspectives and understanding of value chains, functionalities and processes which helps me to make better strategic decisions. I also learned how to communicate effectively with people and companies of different business and cultural backgrounds.
7. How would you sum up the experience of studying at the SIMT?
SIMT doesn?t give the solutions to its students. But for students who want to achieve personal goals and success in a competitive global market by themselves, SIMT provides learning opportunities within an excellent business environment. If you need a chauffeur, choose your Business School by looking at a " TOP 10 business schools in the world " list. If you want to drive your own sports car, then I would gladly recommend a SIMT MBA as a drivers? license.
