I. Summary of the Symposium "Challenge Central and Eastern Europe - Consequences for the German Business" on October 10, 2005

Prof. J. Menno Harms and Dr. Bernhard Seitz

 Reception at SIMT

Keynote speakers at the SIMT press conference

The symposium "Challenge Central and Eastern Europe - Consequences for the German Business" on the 10th of October was a very successful event. The speeches of the symposium and the discussion with Prof. Dr. h. c. Lothar Späth enjoyed wide spread interest. The evening get-together brought the possibility for many valuable contacts to be made. With many participants being CEOs, Managing Directors and Division Managers of important companies the guest list was impressive.

On the one hand the goal of the symposium was to show the chances and risks of the growing regions in Central and Eastern Europe. On the other hand it was focused on the excellent opportunities of the international business school SIMT in this context.

The speeches of the symposium show that the Central and Eastern European markets are still growing. BayernLB will continue to expand their business in Eastern Europe through acquisitions. The Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations refers to impressive export figures. The M+W Zander Group prognoses an increasing need for consulting, construction and modernizing of technical facilities on the one hand (Facility Engineering) and also a growing demand for facilities and buildings (Facility Management). Behr Czech predicts a volume of production of more than 1.5 million vehicles in the next few years regarding the automobile market in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The GFT Group expands their production model, which is known among experts as "Nearshore and Offshore Sourcing", continuously in Central and Eastern Europe.

It is no question: especially on the markets in Central and Eastern Europe the quality of the employees play a key role.

We need highly motivated and well-educated employers, who know and are able to implement up-to-date economical processes like product development, production, marketing, sales and quality management on site.

It is also important to be familiar with the national language and to know the cultural, political and legal frameworks.

The past experiences with students from Central and Eastern Europe are overall positive. At SIMT many highly qualified candidates especially from Russia, Bulgaria, Rumania, Poland, the Ukraine, Hungary and Czech Republic study for an MBA degree. These candidates have decided to study at SIMT mainly because of the region Stuttgart and the partnerships SIMT has with the industry.

The job chances of the today's SIMT students from Central and Eastern Europe at German companies are excellent.

Several companies, which are part of the SIMT Board of Trustees, are very active in these new fast growing markets. Also other partner companies of SIMT, who use SIMT as a corporate university to train their managers and junior managers, are busy in Central and Eastern Europe.

In view of the high importance of the topic of the symposium the SIMT plans new, with attractive content, customer orientated programs with a clear focus on the regions in Central and Eastern Europe, to boost the SIMT as an elite school for managers responsible for Central and Eastern Europe.

Next year we already want to integrate Eastern European elements in the existing programs. The program development of Eastern European specific programs will require one to two years.

Furthermore SIMT plans targeted interactions with industry in selected Central and Eastern European countries. We also want to setup an Eastern Europe Consulting Committee to develop the customer orientated Eastern Europe programs and Eastern Europe specific MBA program elements.

In 2006 a first marketing offensive with emphases on Sofia, Prague and Budapest in cooperation with the companies represented in the SIMT Board of Trustees is planned.

The complete summary with all speeches can be downloaded on the SIMT website.

II. SIMT Leadership Excellence Program to be started in January 2006

SIMT launches a new program focusing on leadership skills. The Leadership Excellence Program (6-days training program over approx. 12 months) is an effective way to turn managers into strategy orientated and social competent leaders. The first modul in German is to be started in January 2006. In May 2006 the English modul will begin. The approved combination of action-learning-elements, training moduls, reflection/peer coaching and individual feedback loops will encourage leadership competencies. In the following 12 months the participants put their personal leadership vision into action. At the end of the Leadership Excellence Program they reflect on their development. The second 360°-feedback provides a measureable feedback of the changed leadership style. The Lecturers are coachs and consultants of Change International Ltd..

IV. SIMT MBA Graduate Portrait: Henry Zhu

Henry Zhu is 29 years old and studied at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China) Engineering Polymer Material Science and Engineering. In 2002 Mr. Zhu graduated with an MBA degree in Management Information Systems from SIMT. Henry Zhu gives an insight in his SIMT experience and how his career has improved since then in China.

My career started as an engineer with a major company in China. I was providing technical support services to customers. In this position the career perspective was not good at all, therefore I decided to pursue an MBA at SIMT. The choice for SIMT was an easy one, especially because of the first-class MBA program offered. The best elements of the MBA program are the high standard of the classes, close contacts to worldknown German companies and the mixture of many different nationalities and cultures of the student body.

This extraordinary mix of backgrounds and cultures of the other students benefited me in the sense that my perspective was internationalized. Now I feel comfortable in dealing with foreign business partners and customers. Thanks to SIMT's close contacts to the industry I got the opportunity to do an internship at the DaimlerChrysler IT Management Department. The knowledge and hands-on experience I gained increased my skills and capabilities. It also made me more self-confident.

The SIMT degree helped to develop my career significantly. Through the MBA I was able to get a position as software project manager in Shanghai. Now I benefit from the knowledge I learned at SIMT. Courses such as project management methods, organizational behavior and IT-management help me to perform good in my current job. Needless to say, in my job I benefit from the soft skills learned at SIMT, like team work and communication.

I for myself can say, it's really worth investing the time and money on SIMT MBA program, because the return on investments is obvious. I can only recommend SIMT because the business school provides its students with high quality education, close contacts to the German industry, international learning atmosphere and a global alumni network, and all of these points will be beneficial to SIMT graduates.
